Remote
working – Smart Speakers
There has
been much debate how smart speakers, such as the Amazon Alexa, collect and use
data – in particular, the concern that devices are ‘always listening.’ Media
reports have highlighted the tendency of voice-enabled devices to wrongly
detect the wake-word and begin recording. In such instances, data is
erroneously collected and may be sent to the cloud for processing and storage.
If you have such devices, it is advised to ensure that it is out of range,
switched off or set to airplane mode or similar for any work related phone and
videoconference calls. It is appreciated this may be a challenge, but is a risk
that we should all take steps to mitigate. If you have any questions or
concerns, please contact the DPO for advice.
